The Mughal general Kartalab Khan marched into the Konkan with thirty thousand troops to crush Shivaji. But Shivaji's spies knew every step of the enemy's path.
Shivaji lured the huge Mughal army into the narrow forest pass of Umberkhind. Once they were inside, his three thousand Maratha warriors blocked both ends of the pass. Trapped between cliffs and Maratha guns, Kartalab Khan had no choice but to surrender. It was one of the most one-sided victories in Indian history — won not by numbers, but by clever use of the land.
